...One of the most popular, comfortable and most commonly used garments is the polo piqué shirt - also referred to as the tennis shirt or simply piqué shirt. The garment has its origin in the world of sports when the, during the 1920's, very successful tennis player René Lacoste started to use a short sleeve knitted shirt that was much more comfortable than the long sleeve shirts that were commonly used on the tennis courts back in those days. The polo players were inspired and developed their own version of the shirt. During the decades to follow the tennis shirt became widely popular and was often worn even outside the sports arenas. The tennis shirt established itself as a category of its own and today many of the worlds leading sports and fashion brands carry their own version of the shirt - often very close to the first tennis shirt in design and construction.
